Since all organizations by definition have some form of management hierarchy, a popular choice among contemporary organizations is to explore the discipline of management and leadership itself, in order to ensure that leaders are effectively pushing the organization towards a competitive position within the market, and achieving positive results. However, determining what qualities make for the best leaders, or which approach to leadership is the best, has sometimes been a problematic process. There are countless competing theories on leadership and its associated qualities, and to attempt to synthesize them all would only be an exercise in frustration. Nevertheless, the search for definitive statements on leadership continues, and organizations have even begun to look to paragon examples of leadership from the past for lessons in how to effectively manage organizations. One strong example of such a text is Goodwins "Team of Rivals", a biography of Lincoln that emphasizes his role as a leader, and the "political genius" which he employed to achieve desirable outcomes for the nation.
