The case of team processes at the Fitzgerald Battery Plant illustrates the types of social exchanges that can be expected to emanate from work teams. The nature of a
work team is that of collaborating on virtually everything for which the team is responsible, including deciding on what those responsibilities will be. Sims and Manz (1999) write in
their introduction to Case 3.1 that a "facilitative leadership role [is] found to be more effective than a directive leadership role" (p. 70), confirming what countless team organizers and team
members repeatedly have found to be true. Team Member Interaction Sims and Manz (1999) joined team members in their team meetings for the
purpose of observing how team members interacted with each other. The word "meeting" can be nebulous... Sometimes it signifies something monumental and direction-defining; sometimes it serves primarily as
a "gelling" factor for teams in various stages of integration. In new teams, individuals must get to know each other, and experience in operation of the team is required
for each to determine the competence and trustworthiness of the other team members. Among those teams that have been in existence for some time and have several successfully-completed work
assignments behind them, these gatherings serve to share information of course, but they also serve to keep individual team members in touch with each other.
In any case, team meetings serve a variety of purposes regardless of the reasons they are convened. If there is a specific purpose for a particular meeting,
the observer can expect to see that purpose addressed right away. If the team meeting occurs because it has been routinely scheduled and has no specific issue to address,
