In well-functioning teams, there is also the recognition of the interdependence that exists among team members (Argos Press, 2008). Team dynamics incorporate the forces that operate within the group and
even outside the group (Team Technology, 2008) that will lead to the teams success or failure There are two major components in team dynamics, behaviors related to the task
and behaviors related to the relationships. We can visualize a Venn diagram with each of these assigned to one circle. This type of diagram depicts the overlap in the two
components. Task behaviors focus on what need to be done to complete the task, make decisions, solve a problem, etc. moving towards successful completion of the objectives (Johnson, 2007).
Relationship behaviors nurture team members, improve morale, develop confidence and other things that contribute to relationship-building (Johnson, 2007). Examples of task behaviors include: initiating activities, sharing information, clearing up
confusion in the group, looking for information when needed and agreeing to adopt a possible solution (Johnson, 2007). Examples of relationship behaviors include: listening, paying attention to others, encouraging others
to contribute ideas, setting ground rules for behaviors as a group, compromising when necessary, and trying to achieve agreement in the group (Johnson, 2007). One of the most important first-steps
in team dynamics is for the group to establish rules by which they will function, including the decision making process they will use. An even earlier task that must
be completed is determining who will be on the team. It is not good enough to just arbitrarily tell certain persons they will work on a team, this most often
fails. Instead, team members need to be selected based on not only their knowledge about the objective but based on how they get along with people (Dawson, 2005). Johnson (2007)
