handing down commands to subordinates. This paper explores some of the dynamics that can be found in teams, and why diverse viewpoints can actually make teams stronger. Discussion The
first thing to understand about a team (or any group) is that the people who comprise it play various roles, whether they are aware of it or not. The
role may be assigned directly ("Sam, you are the leader of the group") or people may come to understand their roles indirectly; that is, as time goes on they become
comfortable interacting in certain ways. Any group contains recognizable types such as the "leader," the "peacemaker," the "obstructionist," the "class clown," and so on. The most important team member
is the leader. He or she is ultimately responsible for whether or not the team reaches its objective; he or she is also the one who will have to
report the results of the teams efforts to her superiors. The leader has to be able to communicate clearly with the members of the team so that they understand what
is expected of them. He or she also has to understand the roles they are playing (whether they were formally assigned or the team members just "drifted" into them)
and take that into account, and the dynamics are complex. For example, lets look at the "class clown" and the "obstructionist." The class clown is forever telling
jokes and cutting up, making people laugh for the sake of laughing and having fun. But hes also wasting a lot of time. The "obstructionist" disagrees with everything
thats said, just for the sake of playing "devils advocate" and pointing out potential problems before they occur. But he too wastes a lot of time. The leader will
