Manz & Sims, 1993 as cited in Kirkman and Rosen, 1999). Many of these teams are formed within corporations in order to meet a particular goal and all teams are goal oriented. When forming a team, there is a looser structure as the hierarchy changes. Interdepartmental teams in a corporation, for example, may be comprised of representatives at various levels. Perhaps a manager will attend from one department, a vice president from another and an analyst from yet a different department. This ambiguity in rank of the team as compared with the rest of the company has created an unusual situation where people are not quite sure how to view the authority of the team composite. Along with that confusion comes the question regarding the defining and assignment of roles. In some way, this is negative, but a positive element of this is that the old hierarchy is negated in favor of a more equitable approach where brainstorming is encouraged and authority is less important. In teams, creativity is possible. Many times, when teams form, the assignment of roles is not done in authoritarian fashion. Sometimes, these roles evolve. Similar to how a foreman is chosen for a jury, sometimes people from various industries will form teams and within the teams, one individual will stand out. At other times, more democratic methods of choosing team leaders will occur. Still, in some industries, team leaders are hired. Roles under team leaders are again assigned, or arbitrarily taken, dependent upon the industry, the company and the team itself. Of course, roles can be adopted or assigned, but what are the chances of success when forming teams?
