Being on my own, nothing is planned out for me, except the host family Im going to be staying with, and the school at which Ill be teaching. Ive got
total freedom to make my own way, and to choose what I take away from this trip. Its exhilarating, but also kind of frightening, I have to admit. "Youre a
man now," my father had said to me as I boarded the plane, and I guessed he was right, for better and worse. As we landed at the airport, I
realized things had changed, or at least my perception of them had, since I had been here with my father. Back then, I was so caught up in our charity
work and being with my father, I hardly noticed anything about the country itself. As I walked through the deserted airport and rode the taxi to my host home across
cracked and pitted roads, I have to admit I was sort of disappointed. Stray dogs, rotting food in the gutters... was I really going to be able to make it
here for six months? I felt bad thinking this way - this was my parents home once, after all - but I cant lie about it either. I started to
wonder then if this trip would end up changing me, and if so, into what type of person? My plan was to focus on my work, just as I
had last time, and forget about the country itself. That was a little selfish, I realized, but I also knew it would make my time much easier... or so I
