approaches to the notion of teaching. In the words of one author, "Planning for diversity in teaching must also account for the reality that individuals do not all learn in
the same way, and any group of students will include a variety of approaches to learning" (Center for Instructional Development and Research, 2008). The student requesting this paper indicates that
the classroom under examination is a South East Asian university classroom wherein many Arab and African students have enrolled. They are very good at reading and understanding English but are
rather limited in oral proficiency and understanding. While some of this paper addresses this particular scenario much of the information is aimed at illustrating universal ways in which teachers address
the multicultural/multilingual classroom. Teaching and the Multicultural Classroom The first question, of the two questions, that the student asks is "What
factors should the lecturer consider when expecting full participation in classroom interaction?" One of the most obvious factors involves the fact that all of the students will not understand the
instruction in the same manner, and some of them will not truly grasp what is being taught or assigned. If some students cannot speak English well or understand spoken English
very well then the teacher cannot expect that they will participate fully, especially if they are spending a lot of time simply trying to process the spoken information. Aside from
