child is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), parents often struggle with what that means in terms of the present and future experiences of the child. In their
immediate experience, they may wonder if the child will receive adequate services, be provided care in the "least restrictive environment," or have experiences that are similar to those of children
not affected by a disorder. A parent might question whether or not the child will ever be able to experience life or live as an independent and productive member
of society. "Denise," is a 32 year old mother of a 13 year old son, "Kyle," who has Autism Disorder (AD). Denise stated that Kyle was diagnosed when he
was 12 months old following an evaluation through an early intervention program. Denise maintained that her son struggles with typical obsessive-compulsive behaviors, social marginalization and negative behaviors, including echolalia,
which occurs during periods of stress. Denise responded to questions about her sons current and future status by first considering the way he performed in the school setting.
