words is a very complex activity. There are numerous different strategies that have been shown to be successful. For example, Joseph Pettigrew, a professor at Boston University, published two dozen
ideas teachers can use (Pettigrew, 2008; Haring, 2006). Pettigrew separated his ideas into categories, which are illustrated in the following samples: * Oldies but goodies include matching synonyms and antonyms
and filling in blank sentences with the proper word (Pettigrew, 2008; Haring, 2006). Synonyms are used to match similar things and antonyms are used to match opposites (Haring, 2006). *
Variations of oldies but goodies include having students choose all the possible answers to stimulus phrases, such as "He at=e lunch in the _____." The choices include: cafeteria, restaurant, snack,
snack bar, salad bar, and diner (Pettigrew, 2008). * Labeling pictures can also help students learn names of different things (Haring, 2006). Visuals are very important for language learners. *
Providing lists of categories also helps the student. Each category contains words that fit into that category (Haring, 2006). Examples might include lists of fruit, vegetables, meats, or any other
