One tactic is the use of positive reinforcement (Reis, 2002). Research has found that verbal praise helps students develop higher self-esteem (Reis, 2002). Students need to know their efforts are being recognized (Reis, 2002). The use of cueing systems is also helpful to keep the students attention focused on what the teacher is saying (Reis, 2002). Overhead transparencies, for instance, helps focus the students attention and provides visual as well as auditory stimuli (Reis, 2002). Another type of cueing system is the use of "ordinal words, like first, second, etc" (Reis, 2002, 175). Students with ADHD have great difficulty completing long assignments (Salend, Elhoweris and Garderen, 2003). One very easy modification that would help students a great deal is to break the assignment into smaller, more manageable parts (Salend, Elhoweris and Garderen, 2003). The entire assignment will be completed but in smaller chunks of work that are not as overwhelming for the student. Along that same line is to make certain students fully understand the assignment (Salend, Elhoweris and Garderen, 2003). ADHD students need very clear directions and to assure understanding, teachers need to ask the student questions, such as "what are you supposed to do?" (Salend, Elhoweris and Garderen, 2003). This can be cared to asking the student what steps they need to take to complete the assignment (Salend, Elhoweris and Garderen, 2003). Motivation is difficult to sustain, as well. ADHD students may lack high motivation because they have a history of failure. It is hard for anyone to feel motivated to do something where they have had little success. This is an issue the teacher can address (Brim and Whitaker, 2000; Salend, Elhoweris and Garderen, 2003).
