South Korea has a complex relationship with the United States and in the international community over all. Experiencing this
culture firsthand could be of tremendous professional value to the Junior Training Officer Corps Instructor because they, in turn, can more effectively pass on what they have learned to their
students. Developing a full understanding of a regions culture is helpful because that understanding can have a tremendous impact on military effectiveness not just in South Korea but in
dealing with the complex relationship that South Korea has with North Korea and with major world players like Russia and China. North and
South Korea have been divided since culmination of World War II. Rather than achieving independence as the United States, Great Britain, and China had promised the country during the
war, Korea was arbitrarily divided into two political zones to accommodate Soviet troops to the North and Americans to the South. Future UN attempts to reunite the country were
resisted by the Soviet Union. Since that division the relationship between the two countries has been somewhat complex, varying from amiable to confrontational dependent to a large degree on the
relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. As U.S. and U.S.S.R. relationships worsened so too did the relationship between North and South Korea. While there are
