death in the United States, just behind heart disease and cancer (Heart Center Online, n.d.; Leduc, 2002). Every year, about 700,000 people have a stroke, 200,000 have had strokes before

is a stroke? It is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the main arteries leading to the brain (American Heart Association, 2005). Medically, it is called a cerebrovascular accident
(CVA) (Heart Center Online, n.d.) but it is also called a brain attack (Cornforth , 2002). A stroke happens when oxygen and other nutrients do not get to the brain
because a blood vessel is either blocked or when a vessel actually bursts (American Heart Association, 2005; Leduc, 2002). This prevents the brain from getting the blood and oxygen it
