Frequently, these students need additional instruction and help in integrating reading, listening, and writing skills in conjunction with cognitive skills that aid them in regards to comprehension. The following examination of literature examines some of the many strategies described in empirical literature that can be utilized in developing the literacy skills of upper primary students. Todays culturally diverse student populations present reading teachers with the challenge of addressing the needs of developing the literacy skills of English Language Learners (ELLs). There are a variety of strategies that can be applied to meeting this challenge. For example, a collaborative activity titled "Spot the Difference" offers a strategy that helps ELLs in mastering the "language of comparison and contrast" (Hertzberg, 2012, p. 64). A group of ten-year-old students, who had Vietnamese and Cantonese as their native languages, utilized Mirrors by Jeannie Baker, 2010, for the task (Hertzberg, 2012, p. 64). This book, using pictures, tells the story of a Sydney family along with one located in the Valley of Roses in southern Morocco (Hertzberg, 2012). The students collaboratively composed sentences that compared the two families using phrases written on cards, such as "the main difference," "in contrast to," and "compared to" (Hertzberg, 2012, p. 64). The sentences that the students composed showed sufficient conceptual understanding of the pictures, but also that their mastery of plurals and articles needed remediation and further work (Hertzberg, 2012). In addition to literacy strategies that are particularly applicable to the needs of ELL students, Hertzberg (2012) describes strategies that can be utilized to aid all students in developing their comprehension skills.
