learners. I also knew that different cultures have different preferred learning styles among students. For instance, some students, such as African-Americans and Hispanic, do better when learning in a small
cooperative group while others, such as many European Americans, seem to learn more easily on their own (Park, 2002). To accommodate all students, some assignments were individual and others were
to be completed in small groups. Additionally, I recognized that some students are far more visual than they are auditory. This led to presenting lessons in different modalities, providing
verbal instruction but also providing visual cues. Students who are English language learners have at least two obstacles to overcome when they are learning math. I recognized that these students
are not only trying to learn a new language, English, but at the same time, they are trying to learn mathematical terms. To mediate this challenge, I take time to
explain mathematical terms very clearly with examples. I also provided a list of terms and placed students in small groups where they played a game of quizzing each other on
what each term means. Assessments of prior lessons revealed some children were still having difficulties identifying the main ideas in stories they read. To reinforce this skill, students were placed
in small groups of four students each where they brainstormed what the main ideas of a story were and what led them to that conclusion. I had discussed this
concern with other teachers in our grade level to gain ideas on how they approached the problem. The small group idea actually came from one of those teachers. Another teacher
