of techniques the English teacher can use in order help student learn more effectively. One approach that has been used successfully in the teaching of English has been Neuro-Linguistic Programming
(NLP). There is anecdotal evidence that a knowledge and use of this can accelerate learning and help give a greater contextual understanding by increasing congruence between teachers and student (Mullrood,
2004). However, there are few in-depth studies that have examined this topic. To consider how and why this can enhance the learning
of English and how t should be ultised by an English teacher we need to look at what is meant by NLP so that the theory is understood.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming may be defined as "the study of the structure of subjective experience and what can be calculated from that and is predicated
upon the belief that all behavior has structure" (Anonymous, 1996). The basis is that the human mind is capable of being programmed as if it were a computer with the
use of language, and a broad range of sensory inputs including sight, sounds. NLP argues that the behaviour which we display will
be the result of the neurological processes, and that it is through these that we experience and subsequently process information that is gathered from the kinaesthetic, visual, olfactory, gustatory and
auditory senses (Dilts, 1980). The thoughts and feelings are then expressed though language, which is booth verbal and non verbal (Dilts, 1980). The programming is due to the way the
