Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 4 page paper addressing the issue of diversity in early childhood. Diversity within the educational system must not only address multicultural considerations which are a major concern but also address diversity in regards to populations which may have physical or learning disabilities, bilingual concerns, gender and technological issues among others. Children surveyed at a grade 6 level already show signs and have experienced prejudice which brings the introduction of diversity in the educational and the home environment to a much earlier level; to that of early childhood from pre-kindergarten to grade 3. Teachers and parents of those in early childhood must be aware of the perceptions of the children, allow open and critical discussions regarding all aspects of diversity, offer the children opportunities to interact with diverse populations and make sure all educational material such as books, television, videos, paintings, music, computer games, and puzzles to name a few should contain diverse populations. Through early interaction, parents and educators can open the child’s learning environment and provide the child the invaluable aspects of acceptance, tolerance and the celebration of diversity.
