Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It that "All the worlds a stage and all the men and women merely players." He was talking about the lifespan of man but
the phrase is potent. Any person who is working with the public is on a stage, they are performing. This may be especially true for teachers because, like actors, they
are trying to get a message across and they are working to have their audience understand it. That is part of the art of teaching. The science of teaching is
essential for any teacher. In fact, many commentators state that good teachers are aware of both the science and art of their profession. The science of teaching is all the
knowledge a teacher has accumulated through study and experience. A person can not enter a classroom and be an effective teacher if they have no idea about learning styles, cognitive
brain functioning, child development stages, teaching models, and the knowledge of the specific discipline to be taught. That discipline has been obtained scientifically as have the information on learning styles,
stages of development, etc. The person who said that teaching was like having control over a group of diverse people may be a bit off target. It depends on
what this person means by control. Teachers are never going to have complete control over their classrooms. There are just too many variables. What the teacher can do is to
adopt a good class management plan to diminish disturbances in the classroom. And, to answer that persons question about how to keep control over the group of students, the teacher
needs to have a solid lesson plan, use an appropriate teaching methodology, use an effective classroom management program, to deliver exciting lessons and to be ready to grab those teachable
