This essay first provides a brief overview of community colleges for the purpose of establishing a mind-set about this level of education. The overview includes national statistical data about community colleges. The next topic to be discussed is the adult learner, how the adult learner learns. Mezirow, Freire and Knowles are brought into this discussion. All of these theorists offered insights about the adult learner. The longest section in this essay explains different learning styles that have been identified in the literature, including visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, the 4MAT system, Kolb's model, and experiential learning theories. Based on the foregoing explanations and discussions, a conclusion is made regarding the presenting question. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

which 992 are public, 148 are private and 31 are Tribal institutions (Association of Community Colleges, 2000). The aggregate student body numbers 10.4 million, 5.4 million are taking classes for
credit (Association of Community Colleges, 2000). Thirty-seven percent of the students are full-time and 63 percent are part-time students, 58 percent are women, and 42 percent are men (Association of
Community Colleges). The average age of community college students is 29 years (Association of Community Colleges). Community colleges awarded more than 450,000 associate degrees 2001 with another 200,000 two-year certificates
(Association of Community Colleges). There are a number of sources of funding for community colleges including state funds, tuition and fees, local funds, federal funds and miscellaneous funds (Association of
Community Colleges). The community college system serves a different population than four-year colleges. They enroll the highest proportion of low-income youth (Illinois Community College Association). This is especially true in
