: This moderately-sized student body from an inner city school in the Midwest is made up of roughly 30 percent white; 35 percent African American; 20 percent Hispanic students, with
the remainder being of mixed or Asian origin. The teen pregnancy rate at the school is low, but the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been increasingly slowly, which
indicates the advisability of educational intervention at an earlier age. Also, recent trends in teen sexual behavior shows that, overall, the rates of sexual activity and pregnancy among teens are
decreasing, as rates for contraceptive use are increasing; however, it is also true that the proportion of adolescents having sex at an early age has increased (Kalmuss, et al, 2003).
In the US, the risk of acquiring an STI is higher among teens than among adults (Kalmuss, et al, 2003). Learning objectives/outcomes : At the end of four 50-minute
sessions that will occur during the period allotted in the students for health and physical education, the students will be able to relate basic facts pertaining to the transmissions of
STIs, including naming the most prevalent forms of STI. They will be able to discuss their feelings about sexuality and the risk of STIs. The students will be able to
discuss and name the various methods for preventing the transmissions of STIs; and also, they will demonstrate ability to resist peer pressure and sexual intimidation in order to maintain abstinence.
