Striking is not only justified, it should be decriminalized. Lansing lawmakers wanted to punish Detroit teachers for their illegal strike, but some feel that the
public would be better served if Lansing created tools that school managers could use as opposed to trying to revise legislation to meet aggravating contingencies as they occur ("State, 1999).
Although school strikes are illegal, actual punishment requires the local school boards or superintendents to invoke the law (1999). It is of course possible to ignore the law. Preferably,
striking should not be illegal. Teachers are not essential employees as without their presence, people will not lose their lives. At worst, children will lose a few days of school.
Some occupations, such as doctors, nurses, EMTs, firemen and policemen, are essential for the preservation of human life. With a shortage of workers
in any of these occupations, human life could be threatened. When the fire alarm rings, there needs to be firemen on the scene or people could die. Similarly, hospitals need
staff and emergency personnel. One can see why striking in such occupations are illegal. However, the worst that can happen during a teachers strike is that children get another vacation.
Teachers should have the right to strike. Some might ask why teachers should have that right. While of course they are not essential
to the safety of others, their work is important. When they strike, parents no longer have their babysitters and some children are left to roam the streets. Children lose out
