educators have recognized that simple punitive consequences for negative behaviors rarely reduce the level of disruption significantly or reduce the chances of repeated negative behaviors. As a result, educational
theorists have considered a kind of "reverse psychology," in which they implement the repeated use of praise when appropriate behaviors are demonstrated, as a means of intervening and giving positive
attention. Because many children who participate in negative behaviors do so to attract attention, giving praise repeatedly for positive actions demonstrates the way in which students can seek out
positive reinforcement. The question that must be asked, then, is whether or not teacher praise can be an effective tool in decreasing disruptive behaviors in students. For more
than two decades, educational researchers have recognized the positive influence that praise has in student performance. Furlong and Morrison (2000), for example, have argued that violence is playing an
increasing role in shaping the American perspective, and is in fact taking a significant toll on the children and adolescents of our culture as more and more children become victims
and perpetrators of acts of violence. Though the National Educational Goals Panel has called for creating a school environment free of violence and firearms (Furlong and Morrison, 2000), educators
and administrators have been unable to secure the promise of a violence-free school. At the same time, communities have also recognized the problem of increasing violence, as more and
more children commit crimes and take out their anger and aggression through distinct acts of physical violence. On a much less specific level, the overall level of aggression in
the educational setting has been viewed as problematic, and recognizing the role of teachers and parents in assessing conduct and behavior disorders and reducing aggression in this setting is imperative
