increasing diversification of the educational environment, and educational directives based on equity, have all influenced trends in teacher educational programs in recent years. The current literature reflects a number
of different trends in education in general that have had an impact on teacher education programs in the United States and the effects of these trends can be seen through
an assessment of certain training programs and training systems. The current literature, then, can be used as a basis for the study of the causes and effects of trends
in education that have influenced teacher education programs since the 1980s. As a result, variations in educator programming, including specialty areas for certification, have become a substantial part of
the teaching process. Background Since the 1980s, questions over the adequacy of public education has led to the call for reforms, both in the educational setting and in
educator training (Cochran-Smith, 2001). In fact, researchers have argued that the "professionalization of the agenda" for teacher education has been a central component of reform efforts that has been
supported by a number of emerging organizations (Cochran-Smith, 2001). These include: the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS),
and the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) (Cochran-Smith, 2001). Cochran-Smith (2001) demonstrates the trend of increasing professional development and improving standards for teacher preparation, teaching licensing
