with the same methodical rhythm and dedication she fostered a decade and a half ago, the instructor readies her room for the new crop of students who will soon be
filing through the door. It is with mixed emotions that she welcomes their presence. Since beginning her teaching career, Mrs. Blalock has
witnessed many changes -- some good, yet some that have been detrimental to her efforts to effectively teach her students. Class sizes have exploded, hours invested have doubled, students
have lost respect and interest for learning, and all the while the pay scale has not reflected such added responsibility. It is no mystery that this teacher is suffering
from vocational burnout; as a result of the corresponding apathetic attitudes, the educational system as a whole is suffering, too. "I feel
more stress, have taken more sick days, and I am overtaken with apathy. I am no longer the teacher I want to be, I feel extremely stressed, unbalanced and
confused. If teachers are simply `cogs in a wheel does that mean we are to quit questioning, wondering, being excited about possibilities and simply become robots?" (Woodard, 1996; 42).
Burnout is becoming more and more common among the teaching sect; there is too much
for them to deal with, even though they get four months off throughout the year. The time that is spent at school is spent teaching classes of thirty to
forty students in a room that only accommodates 20-25; however, that does not refer to size so much as it refers to the mental capacity of the instructor to properly
