of the people in the United States come from so many ethnic backgrounds that they have no real culture. The culture of America is diverse and perhaps empty for many
different reasons. For many people there is the need to make a culture, to define their culture, or feel something in relationship to culture. Tattoos, for many different pockets of
society in the United States, serve the purpose of offering the individual a sense of culture for a variety of reasons. The following paper examines this. Tattoos in
America Many people in the United States may look at a younger generation, and their tattoos, and see the practice as nothing more than a form of rebellion. They may
look at people with tattoos and simply think they want to be different, they want to shock people, or that they are criminal sorts of individuals. One author, in researching
tattoos, indicates, "In the course of my research I found that recent articles by doctors, psychologists and various social scientists all focus on antisocial , unhealthy and bizarre aspects of
tattooing" (Maloney, 2000). Clearly this may be the truth in many respects for there is a culture of criminals who get tattoos
in prison, and that marks them as a particular type of person, connecting them with gangs and criminal activity. Or a young person may get tattoos just to rebel against
the society or their parents. In all honesty, there are many reasons for getting tattoos. But, at the same time having a tattoo is no longer a rebellious act as
tattoos are incredibly common and even the most conservative of people can possess a tattoo. This indicates that there is far more to getting a tattoo than being rebellious or
