She has a quality to her writing that I can only describe as "magical"-her descriptions of ordinary things make them seem extraordinary, and her stories are so beautifully written
that the reader can only go along, breathless, to see what shell do next. This paper discusses one of her works, the short story "On the Golden Porch," what
it means and what it tells us about her. The Story On the Golden Porch is a story of childhood; or perhaps its more accurate to say
its the way the adult world seems to a child, full of wonders and forbidden sensuality. Its very difficult to describe because Tolstayas language is so gorgeous it seems
to shimmer like a rainbow after a storm, and thats hard to explain. The story will cause every reader to think back to their childhood. There is no real
action in the piece; rather it evokes feeling and memory. The narrator may be the author; were not sure and its not fair to assume that the author feels
what her narrator does. The first lines of the story tell us what its about and illustrate her style: "In the beginning was the garden. Childhood was
a garden. Without end or limit, without borders and fences, in noises and rustling, golden in the sun, pale green in the shade, a thousand layers thick..." (Tolstaya
567). The story begins when the narrator and her friends, who are schoolgirls, are hiding in the bushes and see a naked man swimming in the lake.
