Company overview Tate & Lyle is a global company, founded in 1921 its history goes back to 1865 and position today is the result of the number acquisitions and mergers (Tate & Lyle, 2007). The company started off with a focus on sugars and has expanded into other areas including food flavouring. In the 2007 annual accounts the company had a turnover of ?3,814 million and a pre-tax profit of ?317 million (Tate & Lyle, 2007). However, the problem is that the company faced during the 1990s when its all increased levels of competition and decrease profit margins do not appear to be a thing of the past; in November 2007 the company announced a 42% drop in the interim profits (Grocer, 2007). To understand the company and the way it operates a good overview of the way in which it is developed, its strategies, values and financial performance need to be assessed. 1.1 History The history of Tate & Lyle starts in 1859 when one of the founders Henry Tate went into a partnership with John Wright refining sugar. The partnership ended and when Henry Tate was joined by his sons the company became known as Henry Tate & Sons (Tate & Lyle, 2007). In 1883 Abraham Lyle and sons began operations in Plaistow, London only 1 1/2 miles from Henry Tates refinery. Tate specialised in sugar, while Lyle specialised in Golden syrup. The formation of Tate & Lyle did not take place until 1921, undertaken by the sons of the founders of the original companies.
