authors Elaine Tarone and Betsy Parrish explore the importance of tasks as they relate to language accuracy among speakers learning a second language. The accurate use of English articles
in particular can vary significantly among non-native speakers. Tarone and Parrish attempt to understand that variance more accurate by analyzing it both quantitatively and qualitatively. They find that
noun phrases vary according to task and that this, in turn, leads to different article usage. These authors argue, however, that this variance can not be atributed solely to:
"a single variable called attention to form, but to a complex of variables, at least
one of which must be the differeing communicative functions which forms may perform in different tasks" (21).
Non-native speakers characteristically perform differently when communicating in a written form verses an oral form with native English speakers. They also perform differently when relating a story
of a sequence of events (that had been depicted on a video screen) to another non-native speaker. Just as previous research by Tarone hypothesized, three different levels of English
accuracy occurred when these situations were compared and contrasted. Interestingly, however, the hypothesis that more accuracy would be achieved in the formal situation as opposed to the more informal
situation did not always hold for articles. The authors report that articles in this initial research were, in fact, "produced least accurately on the measure assumed to require attention
