in this rag tag, poorly equipped, and poorly planned affair was Lieutenant Colonel Charles B "Brad" Smith. Through no fault of Smith or the men that he was charged
with leading, "Task Force Smith" was more of a folly than it was a demonstration of American strength and experience. Deployed to Osan just south of the South Korean
capital, Task Force Smith was supposed to repel North Korean forces and to present the type of example that would make North Korea think twice about becoming further embroiled in
South Korea given the US support that was sent there. Instead, primarily due to the fact that they were equipped with outdated and malfunctioning equipment, the 400 infantry and
artillery battery dubbed Task Force Smith were overrun by over 5,000 North Korean troops and tanks that were essentially impervious to any of the weaponry that Task Force Smith had
at their disposal. Our troops were sent scurrying in retreat and approximately 185 of the 540 men were missing, wounded, or killed (Maihafer 54). Task Force Smith did,
however, manage to buy valuable time for the American troops that were assembling as part of the first American deployment in the Korean War. Unfortunately Task Force Smith was just
the opening page of a war that would turn out to be a long and gruesome affair for all involved. The circumstances behind the war were complex and multifaceted.
It had erupted, in part, as a result of arbitrary political divisions that were put in place in the aftermath of World War II. The once-united country was
