First of all, teachers should "discuss and provide feedback to students about their homework assignments" (Trammel, et al 75). Secondly, homework assignments should be designed with specific objectives in mind
that are within the capabilities of the students at a specific grade level. Also, homework should aid the students in practicing skills or reviewing material covered in classroom presentations (Trammel,
et al 75). Considering these guidelines, it seems logical that at the beginning of the day, the teacher should offer review of homework assignments from the previous night, providing
correct answers and examining problems that students may have encountered. Students who attempted all sections of the homework assignment, in the elementary grades, might receive some sort of reward, a
sticker in the lower grades or a point of extra credit at the upper elementary level. Students who did not attempt their homework receive a minus mark and an accumulation
of a certain number of such marks should equate with letter being sent home to parents concerning this problem. After homework has been reviewed, it is collected for evaluation by
the teacher. The second stage of homework procedure occurs when assignments are given for the following day. These assignments should reflect not only what has been discussed in class,
but also have specific objectives in mind that are designed to aid the students in assimilating data concerning a covered topic or in perfecting a skill, such as in math.
During this period, students should be encouraged to ask questions concerning their assignments and material should be reviewed if this seems called for. During this discussion, the teacher can
model how to do examples of the problems presented in the assignment. If time allows, students can begin the assignments so that any possible problems can be addressed.
