the population. II. RELIGION Divided primarily among three prominent faiths, Australias religious population is comprised mostly of Anglican (26.1%), Roman Catholic (26%) and other Christian (24.3%), with non-Christians
and other religions representing 11% and 12.6% respectively (The World Factbook, 2003). Just as the religions and cultures of the United States reflect that nations social undercurrent, Australias religions and
cultures have had the same impact upon the continents historic and modern progression. One common denominator between the two, however, is not so complimentary to either ones behavior toward
their indigenous people, with British colonists overtaking the Native Americans when they settled the country and Australias Aboriginal population losing much the same, with land being the most significant dispossession.
For as long as there has been land to exploit in Australia, there has also been a war raging between the developers and the Aborigines. Indeed, the battle that
exists is one that claims to benefit both sides of the issue: the developers for serving the masses and the Aborigines for preserving the sacred land and its resources.
While both parties believe what they are doing is the right thing, they unquestionably clash when it comes to their overall purpose. According to the land developers, mankind has
a right to use this planet in any way that promotes his own health and welfare; however, from the Aboriginal point of view, humanity has damaged and consumed so much
