Discussion Tantric sex is a very old practice that seeks to balance the inner and outer realms: "Tantra teaches us that the external world of objects and events and our
internal realm of thoughts and feelings are in a constant, interdependent relationship with each other. By creating a harmonious environment, we can establish for ourselves an inner state of tranquility
and equilibrium" (LaCroix, 1997, p. 20). Tantric sex is a very spiritual approach to intimacy; it is concerned with far more than just the sex act itself. It concentrates on
helping the partners make a strong spiritual connection, a shared closeness that strengthens the entire relationship. That the sex is better is a side effect of this heightened awareness of
the other person. Tantra is a "dynamic spiritual movement" that began in India in the third and fourth centuries (Stubbs, 1998, p. 34). At that time, many of the Indian
religions emphasized aestheticism and self-denial, suffering and penance: "Only by denying the body and abstaining from pleasure could one lead a holy life" (Stubbs, 1998, p. 34). Tantra was far
different, and to an aesthetic would be considered hedonism, since it embraced "all of life and death"-including sex (Stubbs, 1998, p. 34). All experiences, but especially sex, are opportunities for
human begins to discover their "inherent nature" (Stubbs, 1998, p. 34). Meditations, some perhaps adopted from the Kama Sutra, and "including sexual ceremonies and positions" were developed to
