up female with a bad reputation, Leora Tannenbaum looks in detail not only at the perjorative epithets and harassment which is suffered by teenage girls, but also at the way
in which this is ignored or condoned by those in a position of authority, such as educators. She notes, for instance, that despite the increased sexual freedom of women in
the present day, it is not only those girls who exercise such freedom who are regarded in a negative way by others: a bad reputation can be allotted to someone
for a wide variety of reasons, not all of which are even directly connected with sexual behaviour or with factual information about such behaviour.
Tannenbaum notes that a girls style of clothing, level of achievement at school, type of friends
and associates, can all be used as the basis for her to be categorised as a slut: totally unfounded speculation about her behaviour can also be sufficient for her to
be so categorised. It is not even necessary for the girl to have initiated any activity on her own instigation: being the victim of abuse or rape can also lead
to her being labelled as a slut, presuming on the grounds that it is the sexual activity per se, rather than her consent or lack of consent to it, which
is the defining factor. Tannenbaum also makes the point that once such a label has been acquired, it is invariably very difficult to shed it, and having a bad reputation
for whatever reason can have a significant impact not only on the girls attitude to her own sexuality and sexual experiences, but also on the way in which she relates
