so many different cultures have, within them, different ways of speaking and each culture has a different sort of slang which is always developing and evolving. The following paper examines
"Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan, "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell, and "If Black Language Isnt a Language, The Tell Me, What Is?" by James Baldwin and illustrates
how each essay essentially presents language as a part of identity, and also a part of the political world. Tan, Orwell and Baldwin: Language Amy Tan states that
she loves language: "the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth" (Tan; Comley 68). In this one can see that not
only is language a way to find identity, truth within oneself, and communicate with others, but one can also see that these illustrations apply to the political world as well.
A truth is a very important element in politics and is often overlooked, but through language some of the greatest leaders in the world have brought out truths, or hidden
truths with incredible power. For example, Hitler used language in an incredibly powerful way, playing on the truths of the people, using their emotional needs and then destroying people. Likewise
powerful speakers like Martin Luther King Jr. have been able to touch people, bring them together under one common goal, and convince them of peace and possibilities. At the
