A silent and solemn child looks on the scene with concern, sensing somehow that he is at the center of the problem, but not quite understanding how or why. The waitresss earnest promise of "Itll never happen again" is cut short by a curt admonition that "it shouldnt have happened this time". This picture, currently being beamed into our living rooms via satellite transmissions and the United States Census Bureau, may be a staged presentation of the facts, but the fact still remains that situations like this shouldnt happen, but do. Women in the workplace, whether this workplace be a small country cafe or a major corporate office, face situations much like this every day as they struggle to balance the demands of home and business life. To complicate the struggle even further, women in todays workplace must face the massive obstruction of gender stereotyping that still lingers over the working world in spite of recent progress in the fight for equality. The heavy layers of gender separation and superiority that have been left in the wake of a male-dominated business world have made the climb up the corporate ladder more strenuous and much more stressful than any obstacle course ever devised by the male mind. II. The Beginning of the Paradox The word "stereotype" has been precisely defined as meaning "the generalization about people on the basis of category membership (Finkelstein & Burke, 1998; p. 317). Studies that have been conducted on the use of stereotyping have shown that when one individual lacks sufficient information regarding another particular individual, the first individual in most cases tends to draw on information about the group to which the second individual belongs in order to draw a conclusion about that individual (Finkelstein & Burke, 1998).
