2005). There is some good new in that mortality rates from breast cancer have been falling in Western Europe since 1990, but this is offset by the bad news that
morality rates in Central and Eastern Europe continue to rise (Veronesi, et al, 2005). Experts feel that the decline in morality rates in Europe, Australia and the Americas is due
to a number of factors, such as increased mammographie screening, but included in these factors is extensive use of tamoxifen (Veronesi, et al, 2005). Many types of breast cancer are
dependent on oestrogens for their continued growth (Baum, et al, 2002). Therefore depriving tumors of this growth stimulus, through the administration of a medication such as tamoxifen, is an established
method for treating this disease. Administration of tamoxifen is an established treatment for post-menopausal women who have hormone-sensitive breast cancer (Baum, et al, 2002). However, this medication has been associated
with several negative side-effects, such as increased risk for endometrial cancer and thromboembolic disorders (Baum, et al, 2002). As this suggests, tamoxifen therapy is a combination of beneficial effects that
