site defines "irony" as "a trope that involves incongruity between what is expected and what occurs" (Trope). Examination of The Taming of the Shrew illustrates that perfectly Shakespeares expertise using
the trope of irony. Baptista is a rich gentleman of Padua, with two daughters, Katharina and Bianca. Both women are beautiful. As their father is rich, both women come
with a good dowry and would make a man a good match. However, while Bianca is passive and properly docile, submitting to her fathers will, Katharina is outspoken and has
the reputation of being a shrew. Baptista insists that Katharina, as the eldest daughter, must marry first before he will consent to a marriage for Bianca. Complications of the play
ensue with various men vying for the hand of Bianca. Enter Petruchio, from Verona, who is undaunted by Katharinas reputation and vows to marry her and tame her. The
irony of the play exists in the way in which Petruchio goes about taming Katharina and also in the results of his ploy. While Katharina is used to battles, arguments
and contests of will, she is not prepared for the behavior of Petruchio. In an aside to the audience, Petruchio muses aloud and plans: Say that she rail: why
then Ill tell her plain She sings as sweetly as the nightingale: Say that she frown: Ill say she looks as clear As morning roses newly washd with dew
(II.i.171-174). As this indicates, Petruchios scheme, in and of itself, introduces considerable irony in the play and it is this irony that provides the source of much of
