An 8 page paper discussing some of the discoveries associating obesity with genetic predisposition. Obesity is approaching “epidemic” levels in the United States, and along with its increase also are rises in incidence of diabetes. Diabetes’ high blood sugar damages organs, including the heart, kidneys and eyes. Diabetes is in itself a risk factor for heart disease, and we have known for years that high serum cholesterol (i.e., fat) constitutes a separate risk factor for heart disease as well. The purpose here is to trace fat’s progress and examine some of the factors resulting in some people being lean, others becoming obese while practicing very similar dietary habits. functions. High blood sugar damages organs, including the heart, kidneys and eyes. Diabetes is in itself a risk factor for heart disease, and we have known for years
that high serum cholesterol (i.e., fat) constitutes a separate risk factor for heart disease as well. The purpose here is to trace fats progress and examine some of the
factors resulting in some people being lean, others becoming obese while practicing very similar dietary habits. The Fat Gene Lean people for years
refused to believe what some of the obese had to say about the way they wound up being so much heavier than normal weight. "Theyre simply slow and lazy,
and they eat too much." Some do eat too much, in fact most likely do. Others, however, eat far less than it would seem appropriate for over-sized bodies.
Were the situation such that merely restricting calorie intake would result in the bodys returning to normal weight, we would have many fewer individuals increasing risks to their long-term
health. There are morbidly obese people who appear to enjoy being the way they are and actively seek to maintain their status.
These people are few, however. Many more can provide a litany of diets they have tried over the years, losing weight only to regain it almost immediately, and almost
always with an added amount for good measure. Ultimately, these people end up weighing more than when they began the diet. Much
