and work toward a compromise, it seems to inspire violent anger on both sides so that no common ground is ever reached. This paper argues against abortion. Discussion Forsythe argues
that the pro-abortion forces have used four "myths" to convince the American people of its necessity. He lists them and then rebuts them. He believes that it is these beliefs
and others like them that have convinced Americans that abortion is a "necessary evil" (Forsythe). The first myth is that anywhere from one to two million illegal abortions were
performed annually before the passage of Roe v. Wade (Forsythe). This is grossly exaggerated: "In fact, the annual total in the few years before abortion on demand was no more
than tens of thousands and most likely fewer" (Forsythe). He takes California, the most populous state, as an example, and notes that although it was alleged that "100,000 illegal abortions

from legal abortion" (Forsythe). The third myth is that abortion law "targeted women rather than abortionists before legalization" (Forsythe). This too is untrue, he says. In fact, the "nearly uniform
policy of the states for nearly a century before 1973 was to treat the woman as the second victim of abortion" (Forsythe). Finally, the fourth myth is that having legal
