There are many reasons that developing economies are "developing," rather than already being mature. As producers in developed countries seek out new markets for their products, developing economies
offer open markets and willing consumers. This is the situation Briggs and Stratton sees in Argentina as offering promise for its organization.
As has been common in South America, Argentina has flirted with socialist leanings for decades. The will of the people seems to be rejection of socialism, but to date,
capitalism has failed to effect positive, lasting change in Argentina. The country has struggled to bring its economy under control for years. After being one of South Americas
most promising economies, Argentina suffered economic collapse at the end of 2001 and did not see the beginning of any significant recovery until well into the next year. There
are indications that Argentinas recent economic difficulties are abating, however. The purpose here is to assess the risk that Briggs and Stratton will be assuming if it expands into
Argentina in the current economic environment. Initial Screening: Trade Potential It has been Argentinas intention to build an export economy for several years.
It alternately makes headway toward that end then loses ground, and it lost much of its trade potential as a result of its economic collapse in 2001. Unemployment
already had been an issue in Argentina well in advance of the economic collapse. Argentina has suffered many types of economic angst in the past, and flat exports, decreased
