is perhaps much well known in Egypt and the Middle East in terms of his literature. One author notes that he was an "outstanding figure of the modernist movement in
Egyptian literature. His writings, in Arabic, include novels, stories, criticism, and social and political essays" (Suwellam, 2006). The following paper examines the life and work of Taha Hussein.
Taha Hussein Taha was born to a family that was not incredibly well off, in the year 1889 (Suwellam, 2006). "At a
very early age, he contracted a simple eye infection and due to faulty treatment by an unskilled local practitioner, was blinded, causing him great anguish throughout his life" (Bibliotheca Alexandrina,
2006). When he was around thirteen years of age he was sent to a seminary in Cairo (Suwellam, 2006). It was considered to be the most prominent orthodox learning center
in relationship to Islamic education (Suwellam, 2006). However, he was constantly at battle with the conservative views possessed at this institution and eventually he moved on to a new and
different university in Cairo, being the first person to receive a doctorate from that institution (Suwellam, 2006). He studied even further, familiarizing
himself with the Western cultures, going to France and learning, it seems, as much as he could. It was while in France that his personal life took a turn: "His
blindness caused him continuing anguish, aggravated by a careless brother, presumably sent to take care of him. It was in France that he met his sweet voice, Suzanne, who read
to him, since not all the references he needed were available in Braille. She later became his wife, his mentor, advisor, assistant, mother of his children, great love and best
