Japan, is particularly outstanding in its beauty and distinction, a distinction that is based in more than just a difference between Eastern and Western ideas of architecture but a distinction
that is based in a different way of individually looking at the world and the beauty that the world can hold. His work has become so successful because he
has succeeded in blending the eastern and western perspective. The first design element that captures the viewer with Andos Water Temple is its
asymmetry. In a recent interview Ando himself clarifies and Lane (2005) summarizes that clarification:
"In gardens, asymmetry is preferred to Europes formality. For tea houses, each wall and its openings are designed independently; an animated drawing neatly illustrates this. The approach to a building
is all important" While it is composed of what might seem a harsh medium, concrete,
the Water Garden is a collection of curving concrete walls that gently lead to the observer to the final focal point of a water feature. A traditional lotus pond,
this water feature, is simplistic in itself yet suggestive of deep mystery. The flat floating leaves of the lotus obscure much of the bottom but occasionally one can see
through to the clear waters that lie below. These occasional views serve as an enlightenment but do not relive the omnipotent sense of mystery encapsulated by the pond.
