caused by too little insulin in the blood or a resistance to insulin in the blood. Though glucose is important for human functioning - it is, after all, the fuel
that is used by the body for energy - too much of it means that sugar cant be moved into muscle cells to be stored as fuel because of underproduction
of, or resistance to, insulin. The two major forms of diabetes are type 2 and type 2; type 1 diabetes involves destruction
of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, primarily through autoimmune responses, and is manifested by insulin deficiency (Cheng, 2005). Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is characterized by both insulin
deficiency and insulin resistance (Cheng, 2005). Furthermore, type 2 diabetes accounts for between 90% and 95% of incidences (Cheng, 2005). There is a direct link between uncontrolled diabetes and other
medical complications including cardiovascular disease, vascular damage, stroke, blindness and kidney failure (Cheng, 2005). Those with type 2 diabetes also have fat, liver
and muscle cells that dont respond correctly to insulin; i.e., these individuals are insulin resistant. Insulin resistance means blood sugar cant enter cells properly, and when this happens, higher levels
of sugar build up in the blood, creating hyperglycemia and high levels of blood glucose. Complications from this disease range from heart attack, to nerve damage, to kidney damage, to
sores and infections on the feet or skin; sometimes diabetics end up having to suffer amputation. At one point, type 2 diabetes
wasnt as common as it is today; or when it occurred, it only occurred among the elderly people. But lifestyle changes, combined with changes in diets and a decrease in
