arise when traditional meets modern in a recently immigrated Chinese family, the protagonist, Jing-Mei, begins to see that there are two kinds of people in her family. Her struggle to
understand how she can integrate herself into the best of both worlds frames the theme in this short story, which was pulled from the second section of Amy Tans longer
work, The Joy Luck Club. In Two Kinds there are several examples of those who have not chosen to live true to their own
nature and their own souls calling, and as a result the theme of identity is advanced. Because of tradition and cultural restraints, most of the women have succumbed to the
will of the collective. All except the daughter of their beloved and departed friend. Her name is June(Jing-Mei). June is of the new generation of Asians who have grown up
with American customs and speaking English. Her mothers friends want her to take her mothers place, in more than one way, but even as she tries, she realizes that in
the end she and they will be utterly miserable. It would seem that the soul knows when a situation is repressive. In Two Kinds the
reader watches as a mother tries desperately to give her daughter all the advantages that she never had, reliving, to some extent, the childhood that she wishes she had, had.
This section is told as a flashback, a relived memory, as June comes to grips with the death of her mother. However, because of the unrelenting pressure for achievement, both
at the piano and at school, June rebels. June reflects that as a child it did not register in her mind how hard her mother had, had to work to
