This paper gives evidencial proof, based on scholarly research, that the church, in large part, was responsible for the lack of equality between the sexes. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

A common denominator among all of these areas was that of the relation between the sexes, and in particular sexuality. This brings many questions to mind, since it would seem
that the subject had been a social taboo, spoken of only behind closed doors and in hushed tones. Why now, all of a sudden, was it being written about, discussed
and studied? Much was beginning to change during this time. Philosophy was coming into its own in an effort to make Christianity more human and accessible to the masses. Therefore,
the humanistic movement found a foothold. As such, then, it could be concluded that in their attempts to humanize aspects of the Christian faith, that this naturally led to a
study of human sexuality. As the Bible itself is fairly sketchy about the actual mechanics of sex, the church saw fit to interpret Gods intentions on the matter. Humans
are said to have evolved and changed over the centuries, but the basic sexual drive is as raw and untamed as it ever was. Attitudes and expressions may have changed
but the desire by those in power to control an individuals sexual behavior have not. This is a major theme in John Baldwins The Language of Sex. Whether sexual
practices were dictated by the church or by the state, there were certain rules and regulations which governed the act, and in fact introduced concepts of sexual taboos, including how
sex should be accomplished, who it should be practiced with, and how one should view the act, before, during and after the fact. Women were restricted even more than were
