team of space explorers. In an episode that aired originally on August 8, 1997, the SG-1 team arrives on a planet where the indigenous race is similar in culture to
ancient Mongols (Episode Guide). In this culture, women are relegated to second-class citizenship and are treated as property. The following analysis of this episode employs a feminist perspective that looks
at how this TV show portrays women and what this episode suggests about contemporary Western society. Plot synopsis: Briefly, the plot of this episode, first of all, pictures Carter
as being threatened with death during her first encounter with the chieftain, Moughal (Episode Guide). She is spared, however, because she previously saved the life of the chieftains son, Abu.
However, Abu kidnaps Carter because he hopes to trade her for the daughter of his fathers most powerful enemy, Turghan (Episode Guide). This does not work, however, and Carter becomes
the captive of the Turghan. Carter, of course, is determined to escape, but is also sympathetic to Abu and his love, Nya. Therefore, she endeavors to help Nya escape also.
While Carter is rescued by the rest of SG-1, Nya is caught trying to elope and her father sentences her to death by stoning as punishment for his disloyalty unless
