the debut of a television phenomenon called Star Trek. At the time, no one would have guessed that close to forty years later, it would the "Star Trek" franchise would
still be viable because the initial press reaction was not positive (1966: Star Trek goes on TV, 2000). Only the science fiction community reacted positively to the new show, but
sci-fi fans were not considered as significant as Nielsen ratings. Nothing quite like Star Trek had ever been seen on TV. During this time, cowboy shows dominated the airways
and the series was sole to the NBC executives as a "wagon train to the stars" (Star Trek, 2001). The original pilot was rejected by studio executives as "too cerebral"
(Star Trek, 2001). A new pilot with a new cast (Leonard Nimoy as Spock was the only returning member) and the NBC brass decided to give the show a chance.
From its inception, Star Trek was in danger of cancellation. Countering the first attempt to cancel Star Trek was a letter sent to every registered attendee of the 1966
World Sci-Fi Con. The letter contained a message stating that Star Trek was in danger of cancellation and it urged all those receiving the letter to write NBC. The letter
was signed by some of the greatest names in science fiction, such as Poul Anderson, Harlan Ellison and Theodore Sturgeon (1966: Star Trek goes on TV, 2000). Fan campaigns saw
the show through three seasons and 79 episodes. In 1969, when NBC cancelled Star Trek, fans received a form letter starting that the program had been cancelled because it
"failed to develop the broad appeal necessary for maintaining it on our schedule" (The student should note that this reference is from the time when the show first aired)(1966:
