it really all that harmless? The truth is that there is more than one reason that children should not watch TV. Perhaps one of the most important reasons is
that viewing TV sometimes takes on a great significance in a childs life -- it becomes almost addictive, in a way. Instead of becoming an occasional part of a
childs life, the TV can quickly become the childs whole life. Its a hard temptation to avoid. The parent is happy because the child is safely occupied and
quiet, thereby allowing the parent to relax or do work that needs to be done, and the child is happy because he or she is engrossed in cartoons or a
movie or some other television show. Unfortunately, when TV begins to take on this significance to a child, the result is never good. Soon, not only is the child
addicted to TV, but the item which started out as a once in a while distraction, has now become this central figure in the childs life. Its not long
before real life activities are passed up on favor of watching TV, and therein lies the real danger. Television, while entertaining, can in no way ever substitute for real
life experiences. Sitting in front of a TV does nothing for the physical self of the child -- there is no developing of coordination, no gross motor skill development,
none of that rough-and-tumble experience that kids need. It doesnt take a group of experts to tell us that if a child sits inside twelve, eight, even two hours
a day watching TV, he or she is already turning into the proverbial couch potato, which will do nothing to help his or her body tone or weight. In
