with differing dose rates. "Prostate brachytherapy can be divided into temporary implantation using high activity sources such as iridium-192, or permanent brachytherapy using the interstitial implantation of iodine-125 or
palladium-103 sources. There are various techniques that can be used to actually insert the radioactive material into the prostate. This can be done as an open or closed procedure and
can be performed via a suprapubic or a perineal retropubic approach." (Porter, 71). On the other hand, the gold-standard operation for fixing the problem, transurethral resection of the prostate, or
TURP, is the second most-common surgical procedure among older men in the United States after cataract surgery. It sounds like a fairly benign procedure, since no incisions are made. Instead,
a small tube is slid through the urethra to the prostate, where tissue blockage is electrically cut away and the passage for urine flow is widened.
The problem, however, is in recurrence. The following is an excerpt from an open letter, dated Sept. 21, sent to Australian parliamentarians by Bob Dent, the man who has become
the first person to use the Northern Territorys voluntary euthanasia law. Dent was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1991.
"By mid-1995, I was having difficulty urinating as the cancer in the prostate gland had closed off the urethra.
"I had to have a catheter inserted in order to empty my bladder. I continued with daily self-catheterization until the passage closed right over.
