It is a sideways discussion of sexual and intellectual repression, of a loss of innocence, as well as things that go bump in the night. To that end, then, when
Miles, the oldest of the children the governess must watch, dies, it is a shock to the reader, and illustrates that there is far more underneath the surface of the
words on the page. BRIEF SYNOPSIS Shortly after arriving at her new post, a young governess discovers that the perfect family is not
so perfect after all. It isnt long before she learns of an old tale of hidden sin and ghosts that still haunt. When the ghosts begin to appear to the
children, the governess fears that the ghosts may be attempting to corrupt the children. She determines to protect the children from the influences of the evil spirits while attempting to
maintain her own sanity. Miles Miles is an enigma to the governess. Unusually well behaved for a child of ten, the governess
alternates between believing him an angel and, conversely, possessed. Thus, Krieg, in his criticism, suggests: The governesss perception of evil at Bly has at last been communicated to the
child, but the enormity of that perception is so great that, as the governess says, his little heart dispossessed, had stopped. The moral question, which cannot be avoided, is
