Nonetheless the disease, which has been around for thousands of years, is still among us and has a chance of being transmitted through the homeless population. The disease, to be blunt, is not a pretty one. Although "consumptives" in novels of the 18th and 19th century have been portrayed as weak heroines who cough prettily as they listlessly sink into death, the truth of the disease is much more ominous. It is a painful and debilitating disease and the problem in treating the disease is that it is so hard to detect. With its symptoms of severe coughing, fever, night sweats and weight loss, TB can go undetected for weeks, even months at a time. While much of the population is tested and inoculated against the disease, as mentioned before, the homeless population typically doesnt have access to health services or diagnostic services to determine if they have the disease. Often, they dont realize they have it until they go into hospital emergency rooms, complaining of a chronic cough or severe weight loss for no good reason. When the disease has gotten that far, its a sure bet that the individual involved has already been in touch with and has infected others, unknowingly. As outlined in this paper, conditions among the homeless are perfect for the spread of the disease - it only requires overcrowded circumstances, which the homeless endure in shelters to spread the disease.
